Those elements which increase beauty and attraction in literature are called figure of speech.
काव्य की शोभा बढ़ाने वाले तत्वों को अलंकार कहते हैं।
There are following seven figures of speech.
• Simile उपमा अलंकार
• Metaphor रूपक अलंकार
• Oxymoron विरोधा भाष अलंकार
• Hyperbole अतिशयोक्ति अलंकार
• Personification मानवीय करण अलंकार
• Apostrophe संबोधन अलंकार
• Onomatopoeia ध्वनि सूचक अलंकार
Simile उपमा अलंकार – इसे उपमा अलंकार कहते हैं इसमें दो भिन्न प्रकार की चीजों को किसी एक समान गुण के आधार पर एक समान दिखाया जाता है इस अलंकार के उदाहरणों में से कोई ना कोई अवश्य दिया होता है so, like, such, as and akin etc.
In this figure of speech a comparison is made between two deferent types of things which have at least one point in common. And the compereson words so, like, such, as and akin are given in the sentence.
Ex –
• Her face is like a moon.
• He is so poor as a beggar.
Metaphor रूपक अलंकार – इसे रूपक अलंकार कहते हैं इसमें दो भिन्न प्रकार की चीजों को एक समान ना बताकर बल्कि एक ही समान मान लिया जाता है और इसके उदाहरणों में समानता को व्यक्त करने वाले शब्दों का प्रयोग नहीं किया जाता है।
It is an implied simile .In this figure of speech comparing things are treated as one and the same . And the words of comprison so, like ,such, as and akin are not used.
As-
• Life is a dream.
• Camel is the ship of desert.
Oxymoron विरोधाभाष अलंकार
इसे विरोधाभाष अलंकार कहते हैं इसमें दो विपरीत विचारधाराओं को एक साथ प्रस्तुत किया जाता है। इसके उदाहरण में दो विलोम शब्द एक ही वाक्य में प्रयोग किए जाते हैं।
In this figure of speech two opposite Ideas are put together.
Ex.-
• She is a rich – poor lady.
• Having nothing he hath all.
